Horizons Summer Enrichment Program
(SAVANNAH, GA) Parents, friends and supporters are invited to celebrate the accomplishments of the 145 student participants of the Horizons Summer Enrichment Program on Friday, July 31 at 6 p.m. in Pape Hall on the campus of Savannah Country Day School, 824 Stillwood Drive. The special ceremony will be followed by a catered banquet at 7 p.m. Tickets for the banquet are $5 per person and will be available at the door.
The presentation, which will precede the banquet, will include short performances by each grade level centering around the program’s theme, “Learning About the World Around Us and Beyond.” The evening will also include a display of student work, testimonies from students and parents, recognition of Horizons’ sponsors and Board of Directors, and presentations by Executive Director Gail MacPherson and Horizons Board Co-Chair Dr. Paul Pressly.
“We have had a very successful summer serving 145 students,” says MacPherson. “All it takes is to hear the testimonials of the students and see the results of the testing to realize that this program is worth every minute that we spend preparing for it.”
The program, which is open to rising Kindergarteners through seventh graders from local public schools, is an academic, cultural and recreational enrichment program that enables students from diverse, low-income populations to realize their full potential. Horizons strives to develop the whole child through experiences that build problem-solving skills, foster awareness of community responsibility, and instill respect for oneself and others.
Students in the 2009 summer program spent six weeks sharpening their reading, writing and mathematics’ skills, in addition to participating in recreational activities, honing their social skills and participating in frequent field trips.
“Our focus is not only on the whole child, but the families as well, and we definitely have achieved this goal,” says MacPherson.
Horizons Savannah is affiliated with Horizons National, which serves more than 1,500 students in 16 cities around the country. Oftentimes, the term “allergy” is used loosely to refer to anything that makes a pet itch. Most allergens fall into one of three categories: flea bite sensitivity, food allergy and atopy.
Preventing and treating for fleas
Flea-bite sensitivity or flea allergy dermatitis is absolutely, without a doubt, the single most common cause of skin issues in the Savannah, Ga., area, and you can waste a lot of time, money, energy, and your pet’s comfort by not at least ruling out that it could be a flea problem from the very beginning.
“If your pet is not on an adequate flea control product like Frontline TopSpot Plus, Revolution, Comfortis, or Advantage you need to start now. It’s extremely important to maintain the use of the product every month all year long and to correctly apply to every pet in your care,” said Dr. Carla Case-McCorvey of Case Veterinary Hospital in Savannah.
Just because you do not see them, does not mean that fleas are not there. Every animal that visits your house or yard could be a possible source of infestation. This is why it is so important to apply the flea control product of your choice at least monthly on all animals that live inside and outside your home.
It’s a misconception to think outside pets cannot spread fleas to inside pets that only go outside for short periods of time. Fleas can live in the dirt or sand outside and will jump onto an inside pet.
“In most cases, we know that they’re there, but fleas can be very hard to find,” said Case-McCorvey, who graduated from University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine and has practiced veterinary medicine for 10 years.
Where fleas live
Fleas prefer to be on pets over people, so they won’t bother humans unless the pet is no longer in the area or the infestation is severe. Also, fleas like dark, warm places and will linger well beneath the surface of the coat at the animal’s skin where it’s warm. When the hair is parted, they will dart from the light making them very difficult to glimpse, much less catch and remove.
Pets can also be pretty good at grooming fleas off of themselves. Especially cats, being such avid groomers, will often remove fleas before they can be found. The flea still may have had time to bite, setting off the whole itch reaction.
“If your pet has been diagnosed with tapeworms, then you know there has been at least one flea on your pet because the only way to get tapeworms is by ingestion of a flea containing the parasite,” said the Savannah native.
And you don’t have to have a severe infestation for fleas to cause problems. Even a pet that is being treated with an effective form of monthly flea control may have a flea jump on and bite before it dies. If that pet is highly sensitive to the bite of a flea, then a single flea can really cause severe itching.
Also, don’t be fooled by the products you will find on the shelves of grocery stores or the aisles of discount stores. There are several over-the-counter products that are marketed to mimic the prescription products available through veterinarians. They are actually concentrated insecticides and can be dangerous.
“Not only will they not work as well, but I’ve seen them cause severe reactions in cats including seizures and death,” Case-McCorvey said.
Though they are a little more expensive, “You get what you pay for,” said Case-McCorvey and Frontline TopSpot Plus, Advantage, Comfortis and Revolution are simply going to be more effective.
“It would be foolish not to treat every pet in your care with a prescription flea product like those mentioned previously at least monthly for a minimum of three months in order to determine that the problem is not fleas,” she said. “Once that is established, dietary trials for food allergies or testing for atopy can be initiated.”
Food allergies and animals
Another category of allergens is a food allery and this can prove to be the most difficult to diagnose. The only true way to diagnose a food allergy is to eliminate that ingredient from the diet and see the clinical signs resolve. Technically, we would have to reintroduce the ingredient and see the symptoms return in order to prove the clinical signs were related to that ingredient, but obviously most owners aren’t willing to do this for fear it may make their pet uncomfortable again.
It may also take 8-12 weeks for the clinical symptoms to improve. That means that the pet absolutely, not one single time can receive anything other than the hypoallergenic diet. This may not be difficult for the person who lives alone with their pet and who has will-power against their pet’s begging. But this can prove impossible for the owner with toddlers that continuously drop their food or with a spouse that refuses to withhold “treats”. In those cases, one handful of dropped Cheerios renders the entire 8-12 week trial useless because you believe you’ve ruled out food allergies since your pet did not get better when in fact, he has a sensitivity to wheat.
I also encourage clients to attempt food trials under the guidance of their veterinarian. Simply changing from one flavor to another or from one brand to another cannot rule out a food allergy. It may not be a sensitivity to chicken or beef but rather the wheat, corn, soy or other product that could be found within all the diets in a trial.
In order to definitively rule out a food allergy, the pet must be placed on a diet with ingredients that the pet has never been exposed to before or alternatively, a diet whose protein and carbohydrate sources have been chemically altered to retain its nutritional value but be unrecognizable to the body as an allergen, much like the baby formulas that are produced for infants with digestive hypersensitivities.
Only when the pet has remained itchy in spite of an approved hypoallergenic diet of 8-12 week duration with ingredients to which the pet has never been exposed throughout it’s lifetime can a food allergy be ruled out as a cause of itching.
Atopy
Atopy refers to the classic hypersensitivity to environmental allergens whether inhaled or absorbed through the skin on the paws. Testing for environmental sensitivity can be achieved with intradermal injections and resultant reactions just as in humans or by sending blood to a labratory to be tested against allergens based on geographic location. Intradermal testing is much more accurate, but often owners choose labratory testing due to convenience and decreased cost.
Regardless of the method, the goal is to detect the offending allergen and rid it from the pet’s environment. If the offending allergen cannot be eliminated as is often the case with pollens, molds, grasses, etc. then the goal is to produce a desensitization serum for injection just as is done in humans. Through controlled, timed, exposure to increasing doses of the antigen, the body should become desensitized to the allergen. Results, however, vary in each individual and some owners find this treatment option to be difficult to maintain.
Symptomatic Therapy
Oftentimes, whether an allergy is due to fleas, food, or environmental allergens, we find that our pets need relief while we are trying to expose the underlying cause. Certain antihistamines are safe and somewhat effective against minor itching. Steroids are most effective against uncomfortable itchiness but carry potential medical problems in some pets. Together with your veterinarian, you can devise a plan to make your pet more comfortable and try to discover the underlying cause of his troublesome “allergies”.
Again, I cannot stress enough how often we ultimately find the problem to be fleas. Unfortunately, this discovery may come after expensive and time-consuming environmental allergen testing and food trials. I strongly recommend ruling out flea-bite hypersensitivity first by having every pet in your home or outside on an appropriate monthly flea control prescribed by your veterinarian (not an over-the-counter look-alike) for at least 3 months before discounting fleas as a possibility.

Newell Recycling, one of the largest recyclers and processors of recycled metals in the Southeast, encourages consumers to take advantage of the recently enacted Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS), which President Obama signed into law recently. CARS is a government program that enables consumers to trade in their less fuel efficient vehicles for new, more efficient vehicles.
“We are very excited about CARS, which is commonly referred to as Cash For Clunkers, and are looking forward to participating in this worthwhile program,” says Frank Goulding, Vice President of Marketing at Newell Recycling. “The NHTSA is currently writing implementing regulations for recently enacted legislation. We expect to see these rules in the next 60 to 90 days.”
Newell Recycling currently operates two shredder plants in Atlanta and one in Savannah. The 6,000 hp shredder plants are capable of grinding the equivalent of 170 cars per hour into fist-sized pieces. In addition to automobiles, the shredder also processes appliances and demolition scrap. The technology allows Newell Recycling to separate the steel and nonferrous metals into a valuable, furnace-ready raw material for steel mills, foundries and smelters. The metal produced by the shredder can be converted into new metals more easily and cost-effectively than mining the earth, thus saving precious natural resources.
In addition to the three shredder plants, Newell Recycling has recycling facilities throughout the Southeast in locations including Allendale, Augusta, Doraville, East Point, Elberton, Lithia Springs, Macon, Rome, Savannah and Statesboro, Georgia. The facilities all accept vehicles for recycling.
